Used to be door to door sales was the norm, but now it is just annoying. Today, companies that knock on your door are viewed as aggressive, and for good reason. Many of todays modern door sales people find it difficult to take no for an answer. I even had one try and sell me a roof with a. my branded roofing truck in the driveway and b. a beautiful new roof already on the house. What a bonehead.
So why are we seeing a resurgence in the number of people knocking on our doors trying to sell us something? I think we are at a point in time where it is hard to make your presence known in the sea of information known as the internet. Start ups don't know how to get the word out, and some long standing local businesses are reacting to the start ups aggressive door to door approach to sales by doing the same.
It doesn't much matter that they feel the need to knock on my door. I would much rather they did not. I know how to go looking for what I need. Leave a flyer at the door if you want to, no harm. Don't interrupt me for what very often I have heard turns into a marathon meeting where the only way to get them out of your house is to sign their contract or make threats.
Summary point and word of advice: Hiring someone who knocks on your door and demands your attention on their timeline, not yours, is a mistake. I always announce our presence with about 50 door hangers on the closest homes to the job just to let people know we were there. A little "brand awareness" doesn't hurt. We don't knock on doors, or accost people in their front yards. Look to hire someone whose reputation you can confirm online, and who doesn't begin your relationship with them by being rude, knocking on your door.
So what do you think? Is door to door sales legit in 2020? Leave a comment back on the post, and give a like if you think door to door sales ought to be a thing of the past.
